Hello Everyone
Hope your summer is bringing refreshing, more relaxed times for you. So far, it looks like August might bring good weather now that we are prepared for rain at any time of the day or night.
The Distress Centre Instumental Needs Fund has been overspent for the month of August leaving no funds until September. DCC is the only funding source for utilities. Needs are far exceeding the available funds for most agencies providing funds support to low income clients. Please take time to review the information on the Housing Supports Application Form page. I am making every effort to keep the information up to date including any new resources that might be helpful in assisting clients.
We have been fortunate to have Adrian Wolfleg, Community Liason for Communications with the Calgary Urban Aboriginal Initiative agree to present at our September Brown Bag Lunch. He will talk about "Who is an Aboriginal Canadian?" and will address various legal identifiers of "Status, non-Status, Treaty, non-Treaty, Bill C-31, Metis and Inuit" In addition he will address funding pockets specific to Treaty Indians and Aboriginal service providers for some of the classifications. Adrian will also speak to the experience of transitioning from reserve to urban living. This will be necessary information for any of us working with Aboriginal clients. I will access information about applying for Treaty Status.
The Brown Bag Lunch is the last Tuesday of September (September 28, 2010) at the Distress Centre 300, 1010 8 Av SW (one block from the City Centre C-train station, currently the end of the line). The meeting runs from !2:00 pm to 1:30 pm and a light lunch will be served.
The Common Intake Committee meeting is scheduled for the second Thursday of the month (September 9, 2010) at the Distress Centre from 2pm to 4pm.
Wishing you a very satisfying August
Lynda
